Sophomore Season
When speaking of TV during the last year, I have listed Desperate Housewives, Lost, Medium, Alias and 24 as my favorite shows. There’s not a new show this year that has really interested me, so I’m keenly interested the same shows, several of which are in their sophomore year. Desperate Housewives hooked me from the very first episode and I anxiously looked foward to Sunday nights. But once Desperate Housewives went off, I turned off the TV. I wasn’t interested in watching Boston Legal and when Grey’s Anatomy started, I wasn’t interested in watching that either. My, how times have changed.
One Sunday night after several episodes of Grey’s had aired, I decided to leave the TV on and see if I liked it. I can’t remember the episode, but I was pleasantly surprised and decided to watch it again. After a few weeks, I became pretty much hooked and watched through last year’s season finale.
This year, Desperate Housewives got off to a bit of a slow start, but I have watched it faithfully. I have enjoyed it, but there hasn’t been a compelling mystery to bring all the stories together…yet. The last few episodes, though, have been really back on form and it looks like it’s all about to kick in high gear.
But then there’s Grey’s. That show has been banging every single week. This show is nothing short of amazing: compelling medical stories, wonderful regular characters, and lots of humor balanced with just the right amount of heart string tugging.
Last week’s episode with the two people impaled on the pole was heart wrenching. The actress who played the impaled girl deserves an Emmy for her performance. But what I most look forward to is seeing the characters that I am beginning to think of as friends. The actors who portray them are wonderful…and the cast chemistry is terrific. This show is definitely running on all cylinders.
My favorite characters from the get go were George and Bailey. But I’ve become invested in all of them:
Meridith, McDreamy and his wife – I hope Meredith and McDreamy end up together, but I was surprised that I actually like Mrs. McDreamy.
Bailey – as the show progresses, her character is a revelation: a wonderful mix of toughness, but underneath it, a caring person is there. I loved the episode when one of her first patients came back to see her – that was the first time I really saw her compassion. But then last week, she stopped the elevator so Dr. Shepherd could pull himself together, and tonight interecepted him to protect Meredith.
Alex and Izzie – LOVED when he kissed her at the end of tonight’s episode. And it looked like she did, too. He appears to have recovered from his crisis of confidence. How will their relationship progress and will he pass the boards?
Christina and Burke – A few weeks ago, I laughed hysterically while she sobbed hysterically before yelling, “Would someone PLEASE sedate me!!” Loved when Burke crawled in the bed and held her in front of her mom.
George – he’s a lion in mouse’s clothing. I’ve always rooted for the underdog, but in his quiet way, he’s not the underdog.
So while I still love Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy has totally surprised me and is a show that I absolutely won’t miss every week. It’s almost as good as Buffy was. I hope it has as long a run as Buffy did.
